Today, 26 September, marks the International Day of Solidarity with Palestinian Journalists. This occasion comes against the backdrop of continuing Israeli attacks against Palestinian journalists and media workers in the occupied Palestinian territory (OPT), which are fuelled by Israel's impunity and lack of accountability. The facts on the ground indicate that for Israeli forces, Palestinian journalists are targets of direct attacks, ranging from wounding and killing, arrest and detention, confiscation, and destruction of their equipment. Israel also regularly targets Palestinian and international media outlets operating in the OPT, including by bombing and destroying their premises during military offensives, shutting down their offices, or intercepting Palestinian satellite and radio frequencies. Since 2000, Israel has killed 48 journalists and media workers in OPT while they were doing their work.

Israeli occupation forces (IOF) continued the systematic attacks against local and international media personnel1 working in the occupied Palestinian territory (oPt) despite the protection that journalists, as civilians, enjoy under international law. IOF grave violations against journalists include violations of right to life, threats to their personal safety by targeting them with live and rubber bullets, physical assault that includes beating and humiliation, restrictions on the freedom of movement, bombardment of their offices and other violations demonstrating a well-planned scheme to isolate the oPt from the rest of the world and to provide a cover-up for crimes against civilians and impose a narrative opposite to the reality on the ground.

Thirteen years ago I knew very little about Israel-Palestine. Like most Americans, this seemed to be a distant, confusing conflict that had little to do with me. I was unaware –again, like most Americans – that American taxpayers give Israel over $8 million per day, more than we give to any other nation. [Now over $10 million per day.]

The pattern of killing cannot be denied. Is there a lack of sympathy because the victims aren’t American or European? Certainly the message from some Israeli leaders is that journalists are fair game. Israeli politicians were quick to call for the “elimination” of a number of Palestinian journalists working for foreign news organisations who were falsely accused by a pro-Israel pressure group in the US of being “embedded with Hamas” on 7 October. Benny Gantz, a member of the Israeli war cabinet, said they should be hunted down as terrorists, reflecting a widely held suspicion among Israeli officials that Palestinian journalists are an appendage of Hamas..

Israel's war on Palestine is not confined to the battlefield. It is also waged in the media, nowhere more prominently than in the New York Times. Long regarded within the industry as a national "newspaper of record", its record on impartially reporting on Israel's brutal military occupation and takeover of Palestine leaves a lot to be desired. Though widely considered to be a left-leaning newspaper, the pages of the NYT have been used to whitewash Israeli crimes.

While US and western mainstream and corporate media remain biased in favour of Israel, they often behave as if they are a third, neutral party. This is simply not the case.
