BA4P: Poems --- Literature & Poetry
Charles Ducal
"As in de mond"
tot de staat Israël
Ja, jij, Israël,
bent nu eenmaal beter. Het staat geschreven
in Het Boek.
zonder grenzen. Je ogen zagen de tempel
verwoesten, de straatstenen onder de hoeven
der kruisridders bloeden. Je bent tweeduizend
jaar oud, was erbij in Treblinka, Schirmeck
en Dachau. Al heb je hun water gestolen,
hun kinderen beschoten, hen achter prikkeldraad
krijgt as in de mond.
1 augustus 2014.

Dareen Tatour
“My freedom”
They closed the door on me in a cell
They locked the handcuffs
Tightened the grip
They banned the light from coming in, and it grew darker
So I drew a bulb on the walls
They wiped the wall and seized my firefly
So the sun in my eyes glowed in the night
They covered my eyes, and gagged my mouth
And I let the poetry in my heart light it up
And I ignited the feelings within my soul
The lantern of my poems erased the darkness
They can tie my hands with chains, but they won’t imprison the pulse of life within me
My freedom
My freedom
My freedom
They’ll never kill that feeling inside me.
Four months after her release from an Israeli prison, Palestinian poet and photographer Dareen Tatour received the Oxfam Novib PEN Award for Freedom of Expression (The Hague, 17 January 2019). The audience at the award ceremony was moved when Tatour read her poem, “My freedom”.
Nooit mijn vlag laten zakken
Ze offerden onschuldige kinderen;
Vermoordden haar in vol daglicht.
Heb geen angst van onzekere monden;
De waarheid in je hart is sterker,
Zolang je weerstand biedt in een land
Dat zowel rooftochten als overwinningen heeft gekend.
Ali heeft vanuit zijn graf geroepen:
Bied weerstand, mijn opstandige volk.
Schrijf me als proza neer in het adelaarshout;
Mijn ruïnes hebben jou als een tegenzet.
Bied weerstand, mijn volk, bied weerstand aan hen.
Bied weerstand, mijn volk, bied weerstand aan hen.
Vertaling: Joris Iven.
zoals rozen in gezouten grond.
Ze omhelsden de liefde zonder angst
en werden vervolgd omdat ze verklaarden
“Wij houden eeuwig van dit land”,
terwijl ze hun daden waren vergeten ...
Hun liefde gaf hen dus de vrijheid.
Zie, de gevangenis is er voor minnaars.
Ik heb mijn ziel ondervraagd
op momenten van twijfel en verwarring:
“Wat met jouw misdrijf?”
Zijn betekenis ontgaat me nu.
Ik noemde de zaak en
sprak mijn gedachten uit;
ik schreef over de heersende onrechtvaardigheid,
wensen in inkt,
Luister, mijn lot, mijn leven,
Jelemeh gevangenis.
De dag dat ik de aanklacht ontving.
Vertaling: Joris Iven & Karel Sergen.
“Resist, my people, resist them”
Resist, my people, resist them.
In Jerusalem, I dressed my wounds and breathed my sorrows
And carried the soul in my palm
For an Arab Palestine.
I will not succumb to the “peaceful solution,”
Never lower my flags
Until I evict them from my land.
I cast them aside for a coming time.
Resist, my people, resist them.
Resist the settler’s robbery
And follow the caravan of martyrs.
Shred the disgraceful constitution
Which imposed degradation and humiliation
And deterred us from restoring justice.
They burned blameless children;
As for Hadil, they sniped her in public,
Killed her in broad daylight.
Resist, my people, resist them.
Resist the colonialist’s onslaught.
Pay no mind to his agents among us
Who chain us with the peaceful illusion.
Do not fear doubtful tongues;
The truth in your heart is stronger,
As long as you resist in a land
That has lived through raids and victory.
So Ali called from his grave:
Resist, my rebellious people.
Write me as prose on the agarwood;
My remains have you as a response.
Resist, my people, resist them.
Resist, my people, resist them.
Translated by Tariq al Haydar and posted by "Poem on Trial". The text is also available in Arabic and Hebrew on the same website. For "Dareen's Story" (updated), https://freedareentatour.org/. The website offers more poems of Dareen in translation.

Literature & Poetry:
- « PALESTINE WRITES Literature Festival » : click here!
Palestine Writes is the only North American literature festival dedicated to celebrating and promoting cultural productions of Palestinian writers and artists. Born from the pervasive exclusion from or tokenization of Palestinian voices in mainstream literary institutions, Palestine Writes brings Palestinian cultural workers from all parts of Historic Palestine and our exiled Diaspora together with peers from other marginalized groups in the United States. Crossing multiple borders—geographic, linguistic, and cultural boundaries—writers, artists, publishers, booksellers, scholars, musicians, and thinkers hold conversations about art, literature, and the intersections between culture and power, struggle, politics, climate change, sexuality, human rights, animal rights, food sovereignty, and more. The festival boasts panel discussions, workshops, music, children’s programming, networking, readings, dance, theatre, cooking, oral storytelling, cooking, and other creative expressions of culture. Palestinians are an ancient indigenous people from a fabled and tortured land. No matter who holds the guns and power over our homeland, our nation is deeply rooted in its soil, which cradles our collective memory, as it does the bones of our ancestors. All of our traditions, our stories, folklore, poetry, culinary forms, superstitions, traditional clothing, architecture, art, and cultural habits were born in that singular patch of earth over the span of millennia. Palestine Writes exists as an artistic and literary space to hold dear and celebrate and share the magnificence of Palestine’s indigenous heritage, particularly as powerful forces work tirelessly to erase us.
Palestine Writes showcases brilliant voices from our long-suffering people, devoted to the belief that art challenges repression and creates bonds between Palestine and the rest of the world. ─ « Visualizing Palestine: A Place of Many Beginnings. »

While Palestinian and Arab poets once likened the Fall of Granada to the loss of Palestine, a newer generation is recasting "al-Andalus" as the Palestine yet to come. ─ In 1992, just after Palestinian Liberation Organization officials shook hands with Israeli representatives in Madrid, paving the way to Oslo, Mahmoud Darwish would publish his series of poems, Eleven Planets in the Last Andalusian Sky...
