Oproep voor een culturele boycot van Israël.
Gericht aan alle Belgische kunstenaars en culturele werkers.
Beste collega,
Met deze oproep willen wij u met aandrang vragen aan te sluiten bij de campagne van BACBI (Belgian Academic and Cultural Boycott of Israel) voor een boycotactie tegen de staat Israël ter ondersteuning van de Palestijnse strijd voor vrijheid, rechtvaardigheid en gelijkheid.
Ontgoocheld over de uitzichtloze ‘vredesbesprekingen’ die tot niets leiden en geïnspireerd door de boycotbeweging tegen het vroegere apartheidsregime in Zuid-Afrika, heeft een platform van Palestijnse burgerbewegingen in 2005 het initiatief genomen voor een wereldwijde boycot tegen de staat Israël. Met deze geweldloze actie hopen ze een einde te kunnen stellen aan de systematische schendingen van de mensenrechten en het internationaal recht door deze staat. Ook wij, Belgische kunstenaars en cultuurwerkers willen ons solidair aansluiten bij deze campagne.
Redenen hiervoor zijn er meer dan genoeg. De oorlog tegen het belegerde Gaza in de zomer van 2014 heeft voor velen de ogen geopend. De Israëlische vereniging van oud-soldaten “Breaking the Silence” heeft huiveringwekkende getuigenissen verzameld van Israëlische soldaten over deze aanval en beschuldigt Israël van systematische overtredingen van het internationaal recht. Intussen woedt in de West Bank de koloniale bezetting in alle hevigheid: de al maar verdere toename van de illegale kolonies en de grondroof, de vernederende controles, willekeur aan de checkpoints, afbraak van huizen, nachtelijke raids, gewelddaden van de kolonisten, enzovoort. De Palestijnse catastrofe blijft ook vandaag voortduren.
Misschien denkt u dat cultuur niet past in een boycotactie omdat kunst, theater, film, literatuur, muziek enz. juist dragers zouden moeten zijn van een boodschap van vrede en van eenheid, over alle politieke tegenstellingen heen. Kunst staat net voor kritische zin en kan discussies en noodzakelijke uitwisseling genereren in een context van oorlog. Maar dit argument houdt er geen rekening mee dat Israël ook op het culturele front een oorlog voert. Het Israëlisch leger langs de ene kant viseert de Palestijnse culturele instellingen, sluit cultuurhuizen, verhindert Palestijnse kunstenaars om zich vrij te verplaatsen enz., en langs de andere kant maakt Israël politiek misbruik van kunst en cultuur om propaganda te maken voor haar koloniaal project. Israëlische kunstenaars, theatercompagnies en dansgroepen worden door haar gerekruteerd om in de hele wereld te toeren als culturele diplomaten ter ondersteuning van ‘Brand Israël’.
Onze campagne viseert geen kunstenaars op basis van hun nationaliteit, overtuigingen of inhoud van hun kunst. Het gaat ons om het boycotten van de staat Israël zelf en de ermee verbonden culturele instellingen. Tijdens het apartheidsregime in Zuid-Afrika kondigden muzikanten aan dat ze niet zouden zingen in ‘Sun City’. Vandaag zeggen wij: in Tel Aviv, Ashkelon of Ariel, wij zullen er geen muziek spelen, geen prijzen gaan ontvangen, geen tentoonstellingen organiseren, festivals of conferenties bijwonen of masterclasses organiseren zolang Israël het internationaal recht niet respecteert en geen einde stelt aan de koloniale verdrukking van de Palestijnen.
We willen nog benadrukken dat deze campagne absoluut antiracistisch is en zich verzet tegen elke vorm van antisemitisme.
